Materials List

  • Cedar fence pickets (6)
  • Exterior wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Exterior wood stain or sealant

Tools Used

  • Miter saw or circular saw
  • Drill/driver
  • Measuring tape
  • Clamps
  • Sandpaper
  • Paintbrush

Step-by-Step Instructions

1

Cut the Pickets

Cut cedar pickets to size: 4 side panels and 1 bottom piece.

2

Sand All Pieces

Sand all cut edges smooth. Cedar splinters easily, so be thorough.

3

Assemble the Box

Use wood glue and screws to join the sides, then attach the bottom.

4

Drill Drainage Holes

Drill 4-5 holes in the bottom panel for water drainage.

5

Apply Finish

Stain or seal the exterior to protect against weather.

6

Fill & Plant

Add potting soil and your favorite herbs or flowers.

Tips & Lessons Learned

  • Cedar is naturally rot-resistant — no need for pressure-treated wood
  • Pre-drill screw holes to prevent splitting
  • Let the stain dry 24 hours before adding soil
